One type of post I'll be featuring on the blog is what I like to call Hidden Gems. These are products or brands that don't necessarily get the same hype or coverage as the more well-known or trendy names. And while I know there are many of us out there who most likely already use these products, I think they're so awesome, they deserve extra special props and attention.
For my first Hidden Gems post, I wanted to showcase one of my favorite drugstore lip glosses from Almay, called Color+Care Liquid Lip Balm ($5.99). When I'm looking for a new lip gloss in the drugstore price range, I have a tendency to purchase something from either Maybelline or Revlon, which are my favorite drugstore brands overall. But I'm always willing to branch out and I was browsing the makeup aisle at CVS about a year ago and something about these Almay lip balms caught my eye so I bought Blooming Balm, a lovely light pink color, to take home and try.
I'm glad I did as I loved it so much I bought the peachy-colored Cantalope Cream and sheer-colored Nudetrients not long after. These are truly some of the best lip glosses I've ever used, drugstore or high end. They aren't sticky and best of all, are super moisturizing and extremely long-lasting. They go on sheer enough that even the darker colors are wearable for everyday, but can be applied in layers for a more dramatic effect. And if you read Almay's website, you'll see that as with all their products, these lip balms are fragrance free and formulated with sensitive skin in mind.
If you don't already own at least one of these, you should run out and buy one (or all of them!) as soon as possible, because they are that awesome. I keep one or two, usually Blooming Balm or Cantalope Cream, in my makeup bag at all times so I always have a great lip gloss to throw on. Of course, I've gone a bit crazy over the last few months and decided to purchase almost all the colors Almay offers in this product (seven out of the ten if you're wondering). It's especially hard to resist when they're so inexpensive and Ulta always seems to have a Buy One, Get One 50% Off or Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale.
The colors I've purchased are shown in the picture above and from left to right include:
Blooming Balm (light pink)
Just Plum Good (sheer plum)
Cantalope Cream (peach)
Apple a Day (sheer light red)
Apricot Pucker (coral)
Rosy Lipped (nude pink) - This color is my favorite; it's almost the exact same pinky-brown shade as Urban Decay's Revolution lipstick in Naked.
One of the things I like about trying new drugstore products is that I can test something new without breaking the bank. It's also a reminder to try brands I normally wouldn't. In this case, it worked out beautifully. What are your favorite hidden gems? What product have you randomly tried and are glad you did? Share your success stories in the comments below.
